The Chalice and Its Patena - Liturgical Silverware
The chalice and its patena are exceptional liturgical pieces, designed by Nicolas Marischael and drawn by Guillaume Bardet for the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris.
Made from noble metals, primarily silver and vermeil, these sacred objects are crafted with absolute respect for liturgical prescriptions, ensuring their quality and symbolism.
The Chalice
The chalice is a cup that symbolizes the blood of Christ. Its base is adorned with a central cross, referencing the words of Jesus during the Last Supper: "This is my blood, poured out for you and for the many." The interior of the cup is made of polished mirror gold, highlighting the sacred dimension of the wine that has become the blood of Christ. This chalice measures 10.63 inches (27 cm) in height and is perfectly proportioned to harmonize with the altar of the cathedral.
The Patena
Accompanying the chalice, the patena is a small plate on which the large host is placed. According to tradition, the patena is placed on the chalice at the beginning of the Mass before being placed on the altar. The dimensions of these two objects have been carefully coordinated so that they can be stacked.
